| Marc Woolford is a known commodity to those
who like to check record credits. Working extensively with Ashlely Beedle, Woolford
has peformed on many top flight tunes over the last several years. Here, though, he
gets a chance to flex his own musical muscle and the result is a lovely downtempo-oriented
session that will satisfy people looking for more than dancefloor burners. With only a handful of vocal performances, the emphasis is on the music, which catches everything from grooving world jazz ("Obiman's Return") to spacey funky fusion ("Space and Time") and abstract drum and bass ("Shango Prayer") in its net without missing a beat. Keeping guest musicians to a minimum, Woolford explores the sonic terrain of his mind and the journey does not disappoint. The ten tracks here are sequenced as a whole, so you may find the disc ending quickly after only about 45 minutes. But this is one case where quality wins out over quantity of selections. If you are looking for something to thrill the music connoisseur in you, a visit to the Medicine Man may be just what you need.
