| Various - Phuture Sole | |||
| Scotland's Sole Music is a leader of the
left-center dance movement in the UK. Previous compilations featured contributions
from Joey Negro, DJ Spinna and their leading act Cooly's Hot Box. On this release
they elect for a distinctly broken beat flavor as Kaidi Tatham ("Lazy Days"),
Bugz In the Attic ("Thinking of You") and Jazzanova ("Burnin'")
are highlighted over the course of tweleve songs. In a slight twist from their
earlier collections, you can hear the rumblings of an 80s revival in "Jerk Chicken
Soul"'s rewrite of Cameo's "Shake Your Pants" and Guiro (Sole label chief
Steve Middleton's project) offers "Music," which could have been cut during the
height of electro. That's not to say that this is a collection of retread grooves: Graham Jerimia's "One Day" and "Ordinary Things" by Angela Johnson (the set's steadiest vocal presence, appearing on three tracks) are as strong as anything in their catalog. As a whole Phuture Sole doesn't reach the level of their Sole Visions series but it does contain a couple of gems for those willing to sift through the pedestrian cuts. . Copyright ©2001 B.Graff.
