| Various - The Good Good | |||
| 2000 Black has been hyped as the next big
label in electronic music, having been favorably compared to Talking Loud during its brief
existence. Good Good is their first cd release and justifies the
buzz. Boasting contributions from drum-and-bass don Seiji and the incomparable Roy
Ayers, the 13 songs here cover a wide range of sonic textures. "Black Mary" is
some r&b/folk fusion, Ayers updates his classic "2000 Black" (for which the
label is named), and Nubian Mindz sums up the musical method with "Future Past,"
using new technology to create music with an eye towards the past. Most astonishing is the remake of Coltrane's "Naima," a heavily sought after item for at least a year that is finally seeing the light of day. If the idea of revisiting a jazz standard as an electronically-enhanced reinterpretation violates your standards of purity, you must not know that 2000 Black is owned by Dego of 4 Hero, perhaps the most diverse, experimental fusion artist of the day. His failure to recognize boundaries is one of his trademarks and that spirit is imprinted on every song, offering a glimpse into a new future. His vision may not be fully realized, but the preview is tantalizing. Good Good, at the minimum, lives up to its title. Copyright ©2001 B.Graff. All rights reserved. |
