Keyboardist and bassist Andre Lewis has had a distinguished behind-the-scenes career. In the early 70s, he played with a number of funk acts, including Buddy Miles, Johnny Guitar Watson and Labelle. With the group Maxayn, which consisted of his wife Maxayn Lewis (vocals), Emilio Thomas (drums) and Marlo Henderson (guitar), he enjoyed a top 40 hit in "Check Out Your Mind." He even played with Frank Zappa for a spell, replacing George Duke. He displayed his keyboard virtuosity on a couple of late-70s LPs for Motown. Lewis' space funk landed him a classic cut on "Solar Flight Opus I," a 17-minute odyssey of synths and processed keyboards.
