David Bendeth has worn just about every hat in
the music business: producer, writer, executive, performer. It is
his legacy as an artist that merits his inclusion in the
Encyclopedia.
Born in London, Bendeth started as a guitarist, playing on numerous sessions, including "In the Bush" by Musique. Under his own name, he scored with the 1979 jazz-funk classic "Feel the Real." The song endures as an underground inspiration, its status being confirmed when it was remixed by a number of producers in 2000. The success of "Real" paved the way for a recording contract that saw him issue three albums between 1979 and 1982. After he made the switch to a behind-the-scenes role, he penned hits for Jeff Beck, Joe Cocker, and Bruce Hornsby, whom he signed as an A&R Vice-President. Perhaps his most lauded production credit is for his work on Elvis' 30 #1 Hits collection. The album was one of the best-selling albums of 2002. Bendeth now runs his own label, Type A Records.
