Abstract Truth is a group working to revive the tradition of the live soul-jazz band. Leader Dana Vleck (saxophone), a long time presence on the New York jazz scene and member of Konk (remembered for "Your Life"), formed the group from a collection of musicians who frequently jammed together at New York clubs. Abstract Truth's members include a horn section of trumpeter Ravi Best and Vincent Chaney on french horn (both of whom have played with jazz legends like Sun Ra and David Murray), drummer Pete Mark and singer/composer Monique Bingham. Vleck's prior association with Francois Kevorkian at Axis Studios led to Abstract Truth being signed by Francois K's Streetwave label. "Get Another Plan" was an oddity when released in 1996: a traditional vocal spiced with jagged beats akin to drum and bass. It was an immediate smash, picked up for various compilations, and an album of the same name was quickly recorded. Their biggest hit to date has been "We Had A Thing," a gorgeous house tune that manages to take advantage of their musicianship without losing its grip on the dance floor.
